More information

The Heart Research Centre conducts research into cardiac rehabilitation and the prevention of heart disease, especially their social, psychological and behavioural aspects. Findings are used to develop, implement and evaluate interventions to improve the quality of life of patients, families and communities and to encourage healthy behaviours, in order to reduce premature disability and death from cardiovascular disease (CVD). Results of clinical studies also aim to improve the delivery of health services. Several of the Centre’s studies concern secondary prevention of CVD. Primary prevention is also being addressed in studies of high-risk groups, including families of cardiac patients, rural dwellers and manual workers. Longitudinal studies are being conducted to determine predictors of mortality, morbidity, quality of life and other outcomes.
