GRECALTES (Greater Calcutta Leprosy Treatment & Health Education Scheme) is a Non Governmental Organization which is rendering health services to leprosy and Tuberculosis (TB) patient since 1975. It is credited in pioneering urban control of Leprosy in an organized manner in Calcutta. The seed of GRECALTES has been sown in mid forties when Dr D.S.Chaudhury got an offer from Late Hermann Kober in the International Leprosy Congress in London and eventually the GRECALTES came into existence in the year 1975 under the leadership of Dr D. S. Chaudhury with the financial assistance from ‘German Leprosy Relief Association’. Having a success track of controlling Leprosy in the select local community, Dr D.S.Chaudhury took the challenge to eradicate leprosy from Kolkata metropolitan area. He has got the unconditional support and encouragement in this endeavor from the then Director of Health services, Government of West Bengal – Dr K.C. Basu Mallick.
