Beyond Borders
Humanitarian Aid
Beyond Borders seeks to follow this Jesus by building bridges of sharing and understanding across the great divisions of our day. We do this to foster justice and peace and because we believe that the unique image of God in humanity is best seen in the mosaic of our diversity. Beyond Borders focuses on the division created by the growing economic disparity in our world. Our work both in Haiti and abroad has grown both in its quality and in its size. Initially our focus in Haiti was on directly funding literacy centers for children and adults. We have worked to improve the quality of education provided in these centers by promoting teacher training and more participatory program management, planning, and evaluation. More recently we have sought to increase our impact by sharing what we have been learning with other institutions and leaders in Haiti. We are providing training and leadership development to a growing number of teachers, literacy instructors, community organizers & church leaders. We are also taking leadership in a national children's rights campaign that seeks the elimination of child slavery and exploitation in Haiti. And most recently, we have begun working to bring understanding across the broken relationship between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Biblionef is a dynamic book donation agency based in Cape Town, South Africa. We are unique in that we provide new children's books in all 11 official South African languages, including books in Braille. For many people in South Africa literacy is still a luxury. Children learn basic reading skills in school but in their daily life these skills are not often nurtured. Illiteracy has a direct relation with poverty and limited educational opportunities. The most useful approach to improving literacy in South Africa is through the primary education system. By donating books, Biblionef aims to develop a love for reading in children and adolescents, thus stimulating their curiosity and desire to learn and laying a solid foundation of knowledge for their future.

Big Buddy
Children/Education
Big Buddy mentoring is based on the simple philosophy that boys need good male role models in their lives to become good men. Unfortunately, many boys do not have a father or other male role model in their lives and while mothers do courageous work in raising their boys alone, they cannot model maleness. And above all else, boys learn through modelling. A simple solution is to match these boys with a well-screened male mentor who can foster a relationship similar to that of say an uncle; a relationship we hope is for life.
