Children/Education

The Uganda Women’s Effort to save Orphans (UWESO) was founded in 1986 by Ugandan mothers committed to providing relief aid to needy children left parentless by the civil turbulence of the early mid-1980s, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. UWESO operated in war-torn areas of the Luweero Triangle which in today’s districts includes Luwero, Mubende, Kiboga, Nakasongola, Mpigi, Wakiso, Mukono and Kayunga. UWESO’s long standing experience has brought out the fact that very poor households need to be given a comprehensive and holistic package if they are to break out of the poverty cycle. One of UWESO’s strategies is working with community members organized into self help community clusters. This approach enhances access to “hard-to-reach” orphans and vulnerable children and gives beneficiaries a strong sense of ownership of all UWESO programmes.

The Vale Wildlife Rescue

Each year in Britain an estimated five million wild birds and other animals are injured or disabled in some way. A vast majority of their injuries are caused by people, mostly accidentally, such as road accidents, but some are intentional like poisoning and badger baiting. We at the Vale Wildlife Rescue offer help to thousands of these casualties every year by treating them and where possible release them back in to the wild. We take in more than 5,000 casualties per year our running costs average over £20,000 per month. As a registered charity we are dependant upon donations and sponsorship to maintain the work that we do and the facilities at our treatment centre. We are on call 24 hours a day, every single day of the year. We are a registered Charitable Trust that was set up in 1984. Our running costs of almost £20,000 per month are ever increasing, we are completely dependent upon donations and voluntary assistance. The current global recession is affecting all charities - our donations have decreased by 30% this year compared to the same period last year. Unfortunately we do not have large financial reserves to fall back on so we are relying, more than usual, on the generosity of the public to help us get through this difficult time.
