Malaghan Institute of Medical Research
Research/Dev
The Institute is an independent research facility and a registered charity and is based at Victoria University in Wellington. We believe that the key to fighting illness lies in harnessing the immune system, the body’s own natural defense against disease. In addition to our drive for making discoveries, the Institute is committed to the development of New Zealand scientists and clinicians. Our cutting-edge research is dependent on funding by the community, the corporate sector, contestable grants and trusts. Although completely independent, the Institute maintains close collaborative relationships with tertiary institutions, Crown Research Institutes, hospitals and clinics throughout New Zealand.
Malaika Kids
Children/Education
Tanzania has many orphans with little hope of a future. Malaika Kids aims to help these children and give them a real future. We wish to offer the children a ‘home’ in which they can be safe and secure, receive regular meals and, simply, be a child again. We wish to achieve our aim in two ways: by the Relatives Support Programme and by building Malaika Children's villages. As soon as an orphan is placed in our care, we try to locate family members during a period of up to two years. If this succeeds, the family situation is assessed. Wherever possible the child is placed with his wider family. Usually the family will receive ongoing support, financial or material, from Malaika Kids.

Malaria No More
Health/Medical
Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease. Yet, it takes the life of an African child every 45 seconds and over 1 million people die every year. Malaria No More is working to get a mosquito net to every person at risk of malaria in Africa by December 31, 2010. Malaria No More is joining with the best in African music, culture and entertainment to promote anti-malaria awareness and action across the continent. We are improving processes and tackling logistical challenges by investing in programs like training workshops and research initiatives. We work with African governments to get malaria control tools into the hands of families as quickly as possible.
Malaria No More
Health/Medical
Founded in 2008, Malaria No More UK works with governments, the private sector, faith groups and the British public to raise vital funds and awareness to support projects in Sub Saharan Africa to help make malaria no more. The charity is part of the global Roll Back Malaria Partnership aiming to reduce malaria deaths to near zero by 2015. Ending deaths from malaria requires investments in prevention, diagnosis and treatment for malaria including bed nets, spraying, diagnostic tests and medicines. A vaccine is now in development to prevent malaria in the future. Malaria is a crisis — 780,00 deaths a year, and yet it is a preventable and treatable disease. Malaria No More UK creates breakthrough marketing campaigns, moments and media events that put malaria where it belongs: at the top of the agenda for policymakers and the general public.
Malaria No More! Netherlands
Research/Dev
One of Malaria No More!’s goals is to increase awareness in the Netherlands about the scope of the disease and the impact it has on individual Africans and local economies. People need to know that the knowledge and means are available to prevent and cure this deadly disease. Malaria is manageable and can even be eradicated locally. Malaria No More! does not implement malaria projects itself but works with Dutch and African implementation partners that have proven track records in fighting malaria. Malaria No More! raises funds for effective malaria projects and encourages the public and private sectors as well as citizens to support Malaria No More! in its endeavours.
Malawi Orphan Care Trust Fund
Children/Education
A deserving Malawian student who has lost one or more parents, and has been personally recommended by the Headteacher, will be assigned to receive your donation in the form of payment of his school fees. The student will write to you to let you know how he or she is doing. We welcome any donation, however small. Every £10 will pay a term's school fees for a child at a Malawi Govt. Community Day Secondary School. That child may go on to University or Training College and will continue to be sponsored by us until we feel that he or she can earn his or her own living and support other family members. The Malawi Orphan Care Trust Fund is run by a committee of dedicated trustees, led by the chairman and founder, Gillian Bennett, a VSO volunteer in Malawi.

Registered in 2003, Mamelani has grown into a respected community development organization. Mamelani facilitates programs that assist people in taking action to improve their lives. Mamelani believes in developing communities by developing people. Mamelani works from the inside out, rather than from the outside in. In this way our programs are always in line with the real felt needs of the communities we work with. We facilitate programs that focus on developing people through health education, skills training and personal development. In this way we hope to promote self reliance and Ubuntu, the South African philosophy of realising the personal through the communal.

MANDO

MANDO is a young, rapidly growing nonprofit NGO addressing huge challenges in the southern Rift Valley of Kenya. Its nomadic, pastoral Maasai people face such a severe drought that they are forced to become more agriculturally based. This means reliable water sources must be close to evolving communities. It is looking to help with this adjustment and at the same time overcome root causes of poverty, introduce sustainable methods of subsistance, improve education and gender equality. Its highly effective approach is based on encouraging and enabling the people in planning and decision making. Its Board is comprised of community members who volunteer time and effort. They pledge to maintain openness and accountability to constituents and partners. Its reports and procedures are available on request.
Mango Tree Goa
Children/Education
Founded in 2012 Mango Tree Goa is a UK registered charity which supports disadvantaged children from slums and similar conditions in Goa regardless of their religion, caste or gender. The charity is administered entirely voluntarily which means that more of your money is available to fund projects on the ground in Goa. We believe that children have the right to a healthy, educated childhood, to be safe from abuse, to attend school, to be treated with respect and to be heard. They have the right to act like children and to play. We know that education is the main route out of poverty. Not only does it give children the knowledge and skills to improve their own lives but when they have families of their own their children will have a better chance of surviving and thriving. Our projects therefore focus on education and aim to ensure that marginalised children access and remain in mainstream school and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. We also recognise that nutrition, good health, the provision of uniforms and school bags and the chance to play and enjoy the world about us all help children’s chances of success and we target our funding at these areas too. Working with our partners we have established pre-primary schools at Mango House and Chimbel and afternoon tuition classes at Mango House, Chimbel and Colva. Around 375 disadvantaged children attend the Government registered activities daily and we are proud to report that more than half of the children attending are girls.
