Karmyog
Children/Education
Karmyog was formed in the year 1998, the people involved are veterans in social service having worked for the last fourteen years with neglected and destitute children for putting back smiles on their hapless faces. The purpose of setting up the Trust was the realisation that once the girls turned 18 they had to leave the safe confines of the home and step into the world. Being orphans and destitutes they found it difficult to earn a living and establish themselves. They lacked vocational training. 'Karmyog' observed their desire and need to lead a more meaningful life and decided to sponsor girls to train them so that they become entrepreneurs themselves.

Kashmir Orphans Relief Trust

Kashmir Orphans Relief Trust (K.O.R.T) started after the devastating earthquake that happened on the 8th October 2005 in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. In addition to providing general aid, we began collecting financial aid and within five days had collected over £100,000. With this money we bought 300 tents, food, blankets, quilts, medicine and other aid. We then personally flew out to Pakistan and managed to organise eleven trucks to distribute the aid around the worst hit areas of Kashmir. To ensure aid was distributed equally and fairly we helped to distribute it, to the people that needed it the most. It is our aim that by December 2010 we would have constructed a building which will be able to house 1000 orphans, our own school and other facilities so that we can take on further responsibilities for the orphans of this devastating earthquake.

Today, Burke's provides a rigorous academic program in an environment that cherishes each girl for who she is. At the core is our commitment to building an inclusive community in which each girl can participate fully and knows that there is a special place for her at Burke's.
Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre
Animals/Wildlife
The Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre (KAT Centre) was first conceived after Jan Salter, the founder of KAT, went to visit ’Help in Suffering’ (HIS) in Jaipur, India. Impressed with the way HIS had managed the difficult dog problem in Jaipur by implementing Animal Birth Control and Anti-rabies programmes, creating a rabies free dog friendly city, Jan came back to Nepal convinced that what had been achieved in Jaipur could also be done in Kathmandu. There are considered to be over 35,000 street dogs in the Kathmandu Valley. They are commonly afflicted with severe skin problems, open sores with maggot infections, grotesque tumours, whelping (birth complications) and infectious ailments. Some dogs also carry rabies and other dangerous diseases which can put the human population, especially children who often play in the streets, at risk. After decades of poisoning dogs, it has been shown that this method is ineffective in the long term as the fertile stray population quickly recover their numbers.

Ken-Mar Rescue
Animals/Wildlife
Ken Guild and Martie Petrie have had dogs all of their lives. Since 2007, when they opened Ken-Mar Rescue, they have saved hundreds of dogs’ lives. They’ve developed a track record of effective adoptions. They’ve cultivated hundreds of Foster Parents, to care for the dogs as they wait to be adopted, including many Fosters who have ultimately adopted their dogs. Ironically, it took Martie losing one of her own dogs for rescue dogs to come into focus for Ken & Martie. When one of Martie’s Pomeranians, the frailest, skinniest and deaf, Moxie, got loose the reality of losing a dog to the “system” became all too real. After posting “lost dog” signs, Martie moved her search to a list of 18 dog places in the Silver Lake area. One such place was a pet store with an overriding holistic spirit. The owner recommended that Martie immediately visit a shelter in the area. The owner was so insistent and spoke with such conviction that Martie went directly to that shelter. It was there, among crates of dogs with high-end collars and tags, that Martie discovered that most shelters were not even trying to reconnect dogs with their owners. When she asked for help from the staff, to find Moxie, she was told “Your dog ain’t here.” Undeterred, she went cage by cage, for two and a half hours, searching for her dog. She showed every person at the shelter a picture of Moxie and finally, the one helpful volunteer took her in the back where she found her dog. Moxie had been labeled “defective” because of her deafness and was slated for euthanization. Finding Moxie gave Martie a cause to follow. She signed up as a volunteer at a shelter and discovered that hundreds of dogs are killed each week. She and Ken created a plan to network homeless dogs via the Internet to help find homes for adoptable dogs that would otherwise be killed. By focusing on one or two dogs at a time, they could transport the dogs to interim homes where they could “buy time” for the dogs until adopted. This gave both Martie & Ken a satisfaction that lead them to file for 501c3 to become a bona fide animal welfare non-profit organization. Ken-Mar Rescue was born.
