Fordham University
Based in USA

Children/Education

Fordham University is an independent university in the Jesuit tradition. It was established in 1841 as St. John's College by the Right Rev. John Hughes, Coadjutor-Bishop (later Archbishop) of New York, on old Rose Hill Manor in the village of Fordham, then part of Westchester County. The name Fordham is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words "ford" and "ham," meaning a wading place or ford by a settlement. Rose Hill is the name given to the site in 1787 by Robert Watts, a wealthy New York merchant, in honor of his family's ancestral home of the same name in Scotland. The College, which opened with a student body of six, was originally staffed by diocesan clergy. In 1846, the year the New York State Legislature granted the College a charter, Bishop Hughes recruited five French Jesuits from St. Mary's College in Kentucky and other communities, and the Society of Jesus then assumed the administration of the College. The name was officially changed to Fordham University in 1907. In 1969 the Board of Trustees was reorganized to include a majority of non-clergy members.

We work to preserve our natural heritage and native species. Originally formed to protect our native forests and birds, our role has since grown to include protection of all native species and wild places, on land and in our oceans, lakes and rivers. We give nature a voice. We speak for all our threatened species and fragile places - from endangered Maui’s dolphins to high-country tussock-lands.

Forest Friends Ireland
Based in IRL
Ireland
Environment

Forest Friends Ireland value forests because of their essential role in maintaining the fragile ecosystems which preserve the earth's rich biological and cultural diversity. We are guided by our Strategic Objectives to plant our native trees, insist on the preservation of our native woodlands, and see to it that our native trees are planted in preference to the present Government policy of planting monocultures of non-native exotic species. The principles of biodiversity set out at the Earth Summit in Rio 1992 should underpin action at all levels. The most precious thing on earth is the earth's rich diversity of species, yet that is what is being systematically destroyed, to the detriment of all. Forest Friends Ireland/Cáirde na Coille have prioritised three main projects. The "Neart" project is well underway. Some elements of the Cross Border Project are already in place. The Centre for Forest Biodiversity is a project at the initial stages.

Forest Peoples Programme
Based in GBR
United Kingdom
Environment

Forests cover 12% of the planet and nearly all are inhabited. Many of the peoples, who live in and have customary rights to their forests, have developed ways of life and traditional knowledge that are attuned to their forest environments. Yet, forest policies commonly treat forests as empty lands controlled by the state and available for 'development' – colonisation, logging, plantations, dams, mines, oil wells, gas pipelines and agribusiness. These encroachments often force forest peoples out of their forest homes. Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) advocates an alternative vision of how forests should be managed and controlled, based on respect for the rights of the peoples who know them best. We work with forest peoples in South America, Africa, and Asia, to help them secure their rights, build up their own organisations and negotiate with governments and companies as to how economic development and conservation are best achieved on their lands.

Forests Monitor
Based in GBR
United Kingdom
Environment

Forests Monitor works to increase transparency and accountability of the forestry sector in order to improve governance and management of the world’s forests. We work to achieve this through investigating and monitoring the timber industry and providing training in forest monitoring and law enforcement. Through these activities we seek to establish an open and transparent dialogue with all concerned actors. Based on our experience in the field, Forests Monitor has found that industrial logging, rather than contributing towards sustainable development, often drives corruption, conflict and poverty. In response to this, we are exploring alternative models for forest management, focusing in particular on community-based forestry.

Forever Angels
Based in GBR
United Kingdom
Children/Education

The Forever Angels Baby Home is located in Tanzania and managed by an NGO, under the direction of its UK partner organisation "Forever Angels UK". Forever Angels UK is responsible for agreeing the objectives and direction of the Baby Home, managing the allocation of resources, and promoting the awareness of the orphan problem in Tanzania. Our first project is the building of a Baby Home in Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania. This Baby Home provides a stable, loving home for up to 50 orphaned and abandoned babies and infants from 0 to 5 years, who are severely disadvantaged. It is staffed by trained and dedicated Tanzanian carers and trainees and provides nutrition, love, health care, physical and emotional support until the child is either fostered, adopted or reunited with their family. We believe that all children are born 'angels' - innocent, beautiful and able to 'fly'. Unfortunately we witness many babies in Tanzania with such poverty stricken and unfortunate backgrounds that the angel within them will never be seen. We want to give every child in our care a secure and loving beginning so that they are able to 'grow wings and fly'.

Formaat
Based in NLD
Netherlands
Arts/Culture

Founded in 1999, Formaat started as Theatre of the Oppressed group doing Forum Theatre in schools. Soon we would extend our work beyond the field of education, and beyond Forum Theatre as the only available technique. In 2004, the extension "Workplace for Participatory Drama" was added. We decided to do that to emphasize two things. First, we want to be a place where working with the oppressed comes first. A place also where new techniques are developed and passed on. Second, we wanted to draw attention to the term “participatory”. Participation involves the voice of the participants. It is not the educational value of the drama techniques that stands out. Education is often coercive and based on monologues. Participatory Drama is democratic and based on dialogue.
