First Story is an inspiring initiative and an opportunity for writers to meet some of the most creative and enthusiastic young people in this country. It's a joyful project that deserves as much support as we can give it. We arrange and pay for acclaimed authors to be writers-in-residence in state schools across the country. We aim to celebrate and foster creativity and literacy in young people. We're cheerleaders for books, stories, reading and writing. We've seen how creative writing can build students' self-esteem and self-confidence. We help the students publish their work in magazines and anthologies, and arrange "open house" events at which the students can read their stories aloud to friends, families and teachers. Since September 2009, we have had fourteen residencies under way at schools in London and Oxford. Through its Professional Development Programme, First Story works in partnership with a number of teacher training organisations including The Prince's Teaching Institute and Teach First. First Story CPD consists of workshops led by First Story writer-tutors in conjunction with a member of the First Story team.
FirstLight Trust

The FirstLight Trust is a grass-roots, community-based charity which assists the 'hard to reach' veterans who have fallen through the net and may have ended up on the streets. Those who don't know where to turn, where to go or what to do. We help the 'hard to reach' often homeless veterans as defined by other charities. Those who don’t know what is wrong with them; who cannot cope. We work with the veterans who have walked through our door and tap into their network. We provide whatever it takes to make that tiny difference between life and suicide. And, most importantly, set them on the road to recovery. We provide drop-in centres where there are like-minded people. We are a mix of civvies and veterans and have first-hand experience of what it is like to be down on your luck and not know where to turn (which is probably why we all share a very black sense of humour!). We can assess what needs doing and how and then utilize existing services if possible, or provide/fund alternatives. Help us enable our veterans to stand on their own two feet. Like you and I they do not want to depend on hand outs, charities and services. They want to be part of our community and give back into it what they have received. Help us to do that.
Fisher House Foundation

The Fisher House™ program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House program serves about 10,000 families, and have made available nearly 3 million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990.

The Fishermen's Mission fights poverty and despair in our fishing communities by providing emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Over 13,000 men and women work in the UK's toughest and most dangerous peacetime occupation: deep sea fishing. At sea, they face death and injury on a daily basis. On land, many face insecurity and debt. And life for the 50,000 retired fishermen and their dependants is no better, with debt, inadequate pensions and scant savings meaning no respite from hardship once the fishing’s over.

FWT is a project that aims to get young people from all backgrounds into Fly Fishing. It caters to a wide range of youth groups, not just those that are disadvantaged in some way. Currently activity is centred in the North East of England principally within County Durham and North Yorkshire but it is hoped that the initiative may be expanded in the future. Mr Kevin Dawson from Rothbury in Northumberland will be setting up a section of FWT to cover this area. FWT is the brain child of Tom Carroll who started work on the scheme in 2005 when he became aware that many young people in the area where he lives spent a large part of their leisure time hanging around on street corners with little to do with their out of school free time. As a result many of them got into trouble with the police for anti-social behaviour or were exposed to the use and abuse of drugs. However, despite the original driver that led to the creation of this project, the doors are now open to all comers.

The Foundation is one of the largest privately funded nonprofit organizations supporting fistula treatment globally. While the Foundation remains the largest funder of the Hamlin Fistula Hospitals in Ethiopia, the Foundation's new mission is to raise awareness of and funding for fistula treatment, prevention and educational programs worldwide.

Five Kids Club was set up in February 2008 and completes the overall childcare provision on offer at Five Children's Centre. The centre can now provide childcare cover for children from 6 weeks to 14 years of age.

Five Talents is the microfinance development initiative of the worldwide Anglican church. The church provides a ready made infrastructure – a physical presence of people and premises at the heart of even the remotest communities. This makes Five Talents programmes both effective in their ability to reach local communities and highly efficient. The majority of staff are recruited, trained and employed locally in the individual projects to help administer the programmes. The UK office started in October 2005. Five Talents is currently supporting twelve micro-loan programmes on three continents. The total number of loan clients is now around 20,000, of whom two-thirds are women entrepreneurs. Each loan reaches more than the individual entrepreneur: including the families of the entrepreneur and the families of their employees means that each loan typically impacts 20 lives. Our target is to reach at least 70,000 loan-clients by the end of 2012, impacting one million people through job creation and family livelihoods.

FIZ Advocacy and Support for Migrant Women and Victims of Trafficking advocates for the protection and rights of migrant women who are victims of violence and exploitation. FIZ calls attention to abuses and seeks desperately needed improvements for women who have become victims of trafficking and migrant women who suffer violence. For this purpose, the organization runs two outreach programs: the Counseling Center for Migrant Women and Makasi—Counseling and Support Services for Victims of Trafficking in Women. We advise migrant women in the Zurich area who are victims of exploitation or violence. Violence can take many forms: physical, psychological or structural. We assist women facing problems working in cabarets or the sex trade. Likewise, we advice migrant women on matters related to residency status and undocumented status. We also assists victims of trafficking so that they can live freely and selfsufficiently. We provide crisis intervention and counseling, organize safe housing, clarify residency status, and provide information on victim’s rights.

FLAC is an independent human rights organisation dedicated to the realisation of equal access to justice for all. To this end it campaigns on a range of legal issues but also offers some basic, free legal services to the public. FLAC currently concentrates its work on four main areas: Legal Aid, Social Welfare, Credit & Debt and Public Interest Law. The Free Legal Advice Centres was started by a group of law students looking to use their legal knowledge and provide advice and information to those who could not afford the fees involved. The group's ultimate objective was to influence the national government into instituting a more comprehensive plan that afforded civil legal aid for those who needed it. Over time FLAC has become involved in a wide range of social issues, with a a particular focus on social welfare, but also on credit and debt law, immigration law and equality to eradicate social and economic exclusion in Irish society.

Underachievement in Mathematics remains a chronic problem in South African schools. There is a severe shortage of mathematics teachers, and a large number of students fail to graduate because of poor mathematics skills. FLKS was founded to solve this problem. We provide free maths lessons for underprivileged high school (grade 11 and 12) learners in the town of Knysna. Our operations are lean and focused, with 100% of funds spent directly on student lessons.

In Himachal Pradesh, northern India, there is a village with a school, Florence Convent School, and a small group of teachers working hard and doing their best to give 185 children hope for the future. They are a group of amazing and dedicated people and a lot of happy, smiling children. The aim of the school is to provide good quality education for children of all abilities and all faiths. They have enormous amounts of enthusiasm and dedication but very limited resources.

The Foundation for Mother and Child Health (FMCH), known locally as Yayasan Balita Sehat, began as a support group for English speaking mothers and has grown into an organisation that provides support and educational programmes for impoverished Indonesian mothers and their children. In 2001 we opened a mother-and-child centre in South Jakarta and became a registered charity under Indonesian law. Several projects outside Jakarta has and had been running in West Timor, Aceh and Padang. The Foundation for Mother and Child Health/Yayasan Balita Sehat, provides meals, medical care and lessons for both Indonesian mothers and their children. Mothers have access to health education and small skills training programmes and children have the opportunity to benefit from a preschool education and primary school scholarships. Many of the children suffer from undernutrition and all of them come from impoverished backgrounds. FMCH have run early learning centres (ELC) in South Jakarta and West Timor. These centres enable children from poor families to attend preschool.

We have identified three different stages to homelessness and provide services that will help people move on whatever their stage. Not everyone who comes to us will experience all three stages. Those in crisis are either already homeless or threatened with homelessness. At this stage we provide them with a place to go and someone to support them and help them plan a way forward. Typically the second stage, is a stage of transition and focuses on stabilisation whether it is in short-term accommodation, participation in transitional programmes or participating in training or education programmes. The third stage concentrates on settlement it's at this stage that our customers are offered a long-term home whether it is with Focus Ireland, the local authority or in the private rented sector.

FogQuest is a non-profit, registered Canadian charity dedicated to planning and implementing water projects for rural communities in developing countries. We utilize innovative fog collectors as well as effective rainfall collectors to make optimum use of natural atmospheric sources of water. Our fog collection technology has many applications and can provide clean water in parts of the world where conventional sources are unavailable. It is not necessary that there be rain in order to collect fog, though the fog collectors are also efficient rainfall collectors. We sometimes work in desert areas where the annual rainfall averages less than 1 mm.

Folly Wildlife Rescue relies entirely on donations and its own fund-raising to continue working for wildlife. Each year thousands of injured, orphaned or sick animals and birds are admitted to our centre where they receive expert care and veterinary treatment. Most have been the victims of human activity. As many as possible are eventually returned to the wild. Casualties that have not recovered sufficiently to be returned and which we deem would not settle to a life in captivity are humanely put to sleep. Our education programme, conducted through leaflets and talks, aims to reduce the number of incidents occurring.
